Playing Catch Up #3 - Digging Into Some Other Forms of Volleyball!

So in my second post I mentioned that there were multiple versions of volleyball that I didn't really know about! I decided that this time we're going to delve into them (beach and grass volleyball) and see what they're all about. I'm just going to go through them briefly and describe what's different about them compared to indoor volleyball!

Beach Volleyball

  1. The first thing I realized was that beach volleyball only had 2 people on each side, whereas indoor, it's normally 6 people. This struck me as interesting because if I were to go this route then I wouldn't have to bug 5 other people into playing with me, it would just be me and someone else (which is a lot easier to coordinate schedules)!

  2. Also, something I didn't realize is that the scoring is also different. In indoor volleyball, a set usually goes to 25 points, but beach volleyball only goes to 21!

  3. The volleyball itself is different too! Apparently, beach volleyballs are much lighter, bigger and softer to account for 4 less people on the court.

  4. The 2 obvious differences is that beach volleyball is played on sand and you have to take into account the weather when playing as well (I didn't exactly think of the weather part, but I was briefly reminded that it kind of just goes with the territory!

Here is a brief video of the Canadian Women's team playing their game to get a view of it in action (from the 2016 Rio Games)!

Grass Volleyball

  1. Grass volleyball goes back to the teams of 6s but they also have an option for teams of 4s and 2s.

  2. There wasn't a lot of information on this actually so I had to read the rules to try and get a better grasp on it.

  3. So as far as I'm aware, grass volleyball works the same as beach volleyball, especially in the scoring category.

  4. I couldn't find anything on the ball but I assume it's going to be different than an indoor ball but maybe not quite the same as a beach volleyball since there are more players in this version.

  5. After viewing a couple videos, I did notice that a lot of the people that play are barefoot even in the grass, and I remember reading a rule that no spiked shoes are allowed!

Here is a Men's National Doubles Final for grass Volleyball!

Finally, I think that trying all of these options would be super cool honestly, I love the feeling of tournaments so hopefully I can do that with some friends in the future! I think that I might have a preference for grass volleyball just a bit more than beach because that's easily feasible here in Saskatchewan and can just play in someones backyard instead of travelling to a beach or renting some nets here in Regina.

Thank you for joining me! One more time! もう 一回!
